Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.
1 Thessalonians 5:17

We apologize for the lateness of this month's DeRoos Drumbeat.  We have dealt with a hit and miss internet connection.  Most of the time even our phones work in only certain places.  We recall when we first moved to Haiti, we had to stand up on the roof top and turn a certain way to catch the signal.  It has been like that since we have returned.  Please accept our apologies.

A Look into our Lives

          8 Bands 1 Day

We were buzzing with excitement when the anticipated time came for Grandma DeRoos (Carolyn), Les, and I (Catherine) headed to Missouri one last time before returning back to Haiti.  We were going to have a mini family get-together.

Along for the fun, the Lord made a way for Nathaniel, Rachelle, and the grand kids, to join in this very special event.  It would be a great treat for Great Grandpa and Grandma Kennedy who had not seen the newest family member, Micah Lee, nor the other grand kids for awhile.  It was also a joy to see Catherine’s brother, Tim, and sister, Linda.

What was the central attraction?  We were all there to support Josiah, son, grandson, brother, uncle, and nephew as he participated in an 8 Bands 1 Day festival, in addition to supporting this great cause that Catherine’s brother, Dan, put together.

What was the bigger purpose?  It was to support the poor and needy through this 8 Bands 1 Day event by donating groceries to the local food pantry through a group of churches in the area working together as the body of Christ reaching out in love.

Josiah had 45 minutes to share some of his songs and others, and to be a part of a panel of pastors that were answering questions about Our Identity In Christ.  We were extremely blessed at how the Lord used Josiah and for the opportunity to attend this event.

We will be posting a portion of Josiah ministering in song and how he answered the questions about Our Identity In Christ on our YouTube channel, LWC Missionary Moments.  If you want to be notified when we post them, you will want to subscribe to LWC Missionary Moments.  We know you will be blessed as you watch them.

            Agricultural Update

Our return to Haiti at the end of August was an important time of evaluation.  We had left Haiti for the longest duration of time since we started to work here, and plenty of projects were left in the hands of the Nationals, and it was important to see how things fared in our absence.  One of our strategic goals while working in any country is to “work ourselves out of a job”.  Now, going on seven years in Haiti, we know there should be signs that lean towards accomplishing that goal.  In the past, upon our return, there have been a few uncommunicative setbacks, that wait until we are in-country before we are “enlightened” of the issues.  However, this time, we are grateful to report that all was well.  It was a great feeling to think that the training and empowering over the months and years has built up a strong National ability to care for and manage their own agricultural projects.

We are excited to show you up close what we observed upon our return to Haiti.  We invite you to visit LWC Missionary Moments youtube channel and watch Best Compliment Surprise by clicking the image to the right.

           Eager Learners/Assistant Professors Skill Sharing

Passing on a skill takes more than showing you know how to do something.  It takes patience and a willingness to allow the student to learn at their own speed and level.  Meme is a natural.

Take a look at our blog about these Eager Learners.  (By clicking eager learners you can read all about the experience.)

If you would like to keep updated on the things happening, you may want to follow our LWC blog to be notified when a post is published.  A video is being worked on that will be posted soon as well, so if you would like to see the girls in action and hear conversation mostly in Creole and interpreted, you will also want to subscribe to our YouTube channel called LWC Missionary Moments and ring the bell to be notified.  Pictured here is Meme Charles.

           Identity in Christ:

As believers, Christ does a wonderful act by wrapping his identity around ours.  It’s one of those amazing things only Christ can do.  Passages in scripture that refer to this really shed a light on how we should respond when things get difficult.  Jesus says, if they persecute you, they are persecuting me.  Jesus says if they reject you, they are rejecting me.  Our entire identity as Christians is therefore meshed and covered with the identity of Jesus Christ.  As you walk out your salvation with fear and trembling, what people think about you is really what they think about Jesus.  As we live our lives on the mission field and live our lives to the best of our ability to be examples of Christ…then how they respond to us, is truly how they are responding to Christ. When you are reviled in the workplace for your belief in Christ…those who revile you are really reviling Christ.  Remember when Jesus sent out the 70 in the gospel of Luke?  Luke 10:16, says this, “He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me”. It’s truly such a valuable concept to comprehend and grasp for our own mental and emotional well-being.  What people think of our faith or our Savior is really directed towards Him as we remained wrapped in His identity.  No other religion promotes this!  No other person can do something like this.  It took divine and sacrificial love.  Why is this so important?  Simple. Jesus Christ remains steadfast and sure.  Our identity is as solid as His love for us. While friends, circumstances, and conditions change, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever!  So, here is a question for you.  Why would people have their identity in any place else; such as social media…?

One of the things that is concerning for us with social media is the place of importance it has taken in the lives of its users.  Millions of Americans are now addicted to their telephones.  The very real threat of believing somehow your identity and self-worth depends upon the number of likes you can get on a post on Facebook is now common place in our social media society.  Believers and unbelievers alike spend hours posting about their lives, and in some cases, use their phones to help them feel self-worth and build up their self-esteem.  Instead of being content in Christ, the newest trend is to build a visual social identity.  While social media can have its benefits, it still requires a balanced approached. We have small comparison for you.  You think about what you are through social media, and then look at what you are in Christ on the provided clip art.

One Starfish At A Time

                                                                              THEN                                          NOW

My how time flies… Back in January of 2014, the picture was taken of Ruebens.  It was the official beginning of the James 1:27 Center (James).  Although it was several months before homes were on site at the current location, babies started to arrive and stayed at the Consolation Center of Haiti (CCH). God has done amazing things over the last four years and eight months.  Ruebens was the first of the many abandoned children who have been loved and cared for at James.  To watch Ruebens run around and play with other boys his age or play with other children who first lived at James is such a surreal feeling.  We know for certain, if not for the James ministry to abandoned children, Ruebens would not be alive today.  That’s a hard thought to wrap our brains around!  We are grateful for the generous support over the years to the James project and would encourage you to evaluate if it’s possible to help in some way. Right now, there are 12 children who are under the age of three who live at James.  We continue to see God use the James 1:27 Center to produce more “starfish” those that are helped.   Please contact us if you would like to help or have more questions.  Thanks!
