"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary
; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31

The word for this month is waitW-A-I-T!  While we would prefer to be active in Israel, we are currently in a “holding pattern”.  In spite of the waiting, we are staying busy with serving and sharing.

A Look into our Lives

October marks the 6th month we have been stateside as we prepare for our next opportunity.  We wished we had specific new news to share about Israel, but at this point, we are still “playing the waiting game”.  We did reach out to the organization in Israel to see if they thought there was a need for concern,  They responded by sharing how October is filled with Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur and Sukkot, are both extremely popular holidays, and the likeliness of government offices being closed due to the holidays, and therefore things getting delayed.  So, we are content to wait upon the Lord and enjoy our time in transition.

        Family FUN

Our whirlwind of a road trip went very well and was filled with so much fun and laughter.  We even managed to pull off SURPRISING Nathaniel & Rachelle's entire family. Imagine the look on their faces when they opened their front door.  It was PRICELESS!  Hahaha!  EmojiEmoji

We saw all four of our children over an eleven-day period, drove through ten different states and
traveled 2,953 miles.

Special Times!

Haiti Update

Political Unrest vs. A Natural Disaster

In our correspondence over the last couple of days with close Haitian and missionary friends in Haiti, we received this update.  Food availability is scarce; therefore food prices are very high.  A recent example shared with us was the cost of a 55-pound bag of rice.  Before the unrest, the purchase price was $10, now that same bag of rice, if you can find it, is $33.  Most schools are forced to stay closed with the threat of students being kidnapped.  This is one example of the opposition’s tactics to keep the country in disarray.  Missionaries in the Les Cayes area, so far, have not been threatened, but they also are impacted by the lack of any ability to function in ministry.  Some missionaries have left or are planning to leave due to that fact.  Fuel continues to be scarce and it’s not safe to be at the pumps when the fuel station opens due to the chaos that ensues.

We have heard of varying organizations trying to get food from elsewhere to their prospective projects.  One organization that we are aware of is evaluating the possibility of buying supplies in the Dominican Republic and shipping them via boat to a designated place in Haiti and distribute them from there.  Others are using planes from private or aviation ministries to bring supplies in.   This situation reminds us of the hardship that was caused by Hurricane Matthew three years ago.  Since this is political unrest vs. a natural disaster, a person hardly hears about it in the major news outlets.  However, it feels and acts like a catastrophic event none-the-less to the people of Haiti.  We would ask a couple of things from you.  If you desire to help financially, please send your donations earmarked to Haiti Crisis, and we’ll get them sent to people on the ground in Haiti.  The other request is that you continue to pray for peace in Haiti!!

            Waiting upon the Lord

What comes to your mind when we ask, what does waiting on the Lord mean? Do you automatically think about waiting in prayer or spending more quality time in the scriptures?  Or could it be just some sort of concentrated idleness as you wait on God??  Perhaps you may have a scripture verse come to mind as the one mentioned at the top of this newsletter.  We like what the Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible has to say in reference to Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait upon the Lord - The word rendered 'wait upon' here (from קוה qavah ), denotes properly to wait, in the sense of expecting. The phrase, 'to wait on Yahweh,' means to wait for his help; that is, to trust in him, to put our hope or confidence in him. It is applicable to those who are in circumstances of danger or want, and who look to him for his merciful interposition. Here it properly refers to those who were suffering a long and grievous captivity in Babylon, and who had no prospect of deliverance but in him.…The farmer who should wait for God to plow and sow his fields, would not only be disappointed but would be guilty of provoking Him. And so the man who waits for God to do what he ought to do; to save him without using any of the means of grace, will not only be disappointed but will provoke his displeasure.”

On a more personal note: We have spent the last couple of months waiting on the Lord.  It’s been a peculiar time for us as we thought by this time we would already be in Israel.  It certainly has been an enjoyable time to spend with family, friends, and churches, but our desire and hope are to serve in Israel.  While we have been waiting, we are remaining expectant and confident that He has this under control.  It’s funny though, how doubts and the “what ifs” creep in to try to weaken our trust or confidence.  It’s been important for us to use scriptures or morning devotions to reaffirm ourselves and rest in the assurance of His word.  We could especially relate to the part of Barnes’ quote talking about the farmer.  It’s one thing to wait on God without performing “what we ought to do...”.  Fortunately, we feel like we have done all we can do and now along with prayer and supplication, we can wait and watch His mighty handwork on our behalf.

How about you?  Is there an event or situation that you are stressing over?  Have you defaulted to a worry mode vs. a waiting mode?  Rest assured God’s right there with you.  Can we pray with you for your situation?  We’d love to help in that way.  Please reply to this email and share your prayer request.  We also covet your prayers as we wait upon the Lord!

Prayer & Praise

Please continue to pray for the people and country of Haiti!  We are hearing very sad and tragic stories about the hardship forced on the people as they try to endure through all this.

Praise The Lord for a chance to visit friends, family, and churches.
Pray for continued wisdom and patience as we plan for the trip to Israel and wait to hear the results of the application.
Praise the Lord for a wonderful visit with our daughter and sons and their families.  We were so blessed to see them all.
Pray for our times of sharing over the next month.

Thank you for keeping our future in your prayers!

Waiting on Him,

Les & Catherine
