But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people;
that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness
into his marvellous light;

1 Peter 2:9

<<Salutation>>

          We're moving out of our home and renting it.  Oh, how good it feels. Minimalizing and cleaning out the years of stateside living has been this month's BIG goal.  It has been very freeing and rewarding.

A Look into our Lives

          Traveling & Visiting Joys

          In the past month’s DeRoos Drumbeat, we have mentioned the many opportunities we have had to be involved with family, and a variety of events.  During all these great experiences we have visited a number of churches to share about the country of Haiti and the exciting work God is doing and our involvement in the work.  We are very thankful for the willing partners who open their pulpits and the privilege to share and reconnect with so many friends.

          Over the last couple of years, it has been a challenge for us to get a chance to visit several churches due to the nature of our schedule.  We decided it was important to lengthen our stay this time back to spend quality time communicating our vision, gratitude, and appreciation, to those who make it possible for us to do what we do!  While it’s very difficult to visit everyone, it has been a blessing to worship and share with numerous congregations, and we still have some visiting to do before we return to Haiti. For others, we have reached out to the Pastor, and spent some informal time reconnecting, and in some cases, introducing ourselves for the first time.  We praise God for the team He has placed around us.  God is so good!!

Haiti Update

             Haiti's Unrest

           Most likely over the last month you have heard of the unrest in Haiti.  We have had quite a few people ask us if all this recent disturbing news will impact our plans to return to Haiti.  We have been monitoring the situation closely and have been in contact with friends in Haiti to give us a first-hand perspective of the situation.  As things sit right now, it appears the proposed fuel price increases (The main cause of the unrest) have been suspended.  Most of the demonstrations and ensuing actions, such as looting and burning of property were over fairly quick as the government backtracked due to the large scale of civil unrest.  See this brief article to better understand the dynamics of what occurred earlier in the month: Haiti Protests.

            We have our tickets purchased for late August and feel confident things will return to the usual unpredictable normal.  We have been in contact with missionary friends and Haitian friends in-country that have a better sense of the current conditions.  With that being said, this is an example of why your prayers are so important to us.  Please continue to keep us in your prayers!!

Haiti Update

            Politically Correct

            Merriam Webster defines it this way, "conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated"

            Here’s a question for you, what happens when being politically correct goes against a Christian worldview?  In other words, what do we think if the agenda of politically correctness is driven by humanistic, ungodly sources?  For that is what is happening.  In politically correct circles, the Bible is relative and has no authoritative application.  So now we, as Christians, are being coerced to accept and apply a “language and practices” position that is driven by an ungodly culture and society.  Don’t misunderstand, some political correctness is important if it meshes with scripture, but much of it doesn’t.

            As Christians, we are actually warned about how we conform.  Romans 12:1-2 says,  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  It’s alarming to us to see our country so polarized and displaying such high levels of hate and turmoil. There have always been disagreement.  There has always been differing opinions.  However, something has changed.  It’s like the response to disagreement has morphed all of a sudden.  What once was allowed, for some reason doesn’t seem to be tolerated no less.  This non-tolerance stance has opened a whole new level of responses.  It’s difficult to remember a time when disagreeing or having a differing opinion was met with such hostility and outright disrespect of another person’s opinion.  From harsh words to violent actions all because of differing opinions.

            It’s doubtful this will change any time soon, and as things erode around us, especially with regard to Judaeo Christian values, what is our response?  Well, we better go back to the Bible!  Our instruction is clearly laid out in the pages of our “instruction manual”.  So, here are some passages that give us a way to respond to disagreement in a time where negative responses are so popular.
·
            1 Peter 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
·
            Matthew 5:14-16  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
·
            Mark 9:49-50  For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
·
            Colossians 4:6  Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

            Go in the grace and peace of the Lord!

One Starfish at a Time

         Madam Denise:

          As we work in Haiti and do our best to live an example of a Christian lifestyle, we never really know how that is impacting those around us.  This One Starfish at a Time highlights someone we interact with in our living area vs at Consolation Center of Haiti (CCH).  Denise is a mother of nine who lives in our local community called Bamboula.  She has helped us at our home for several years.  She does a variety of tasks; such as, helping keep the compound clean, washing bedding and towels after a team leaves, and outside routine cleaning of the house.  Over time she and her family has become a regular part of our lives with almost daily interaction.

         She has helped us to understand the individual and personal struggles that occur for many families in the lower income level.  She has thoughts like, how will my children be able to attend school?  Where will the money come from for school uniforms, shoes, and textbooks?  How will I feed my family today?  All major concerns and real issues that don’t seem to ever go away for her.  Laborers With Christ has reached out to her and her family over the years; but, it’s a juggling act to know when helping is helping or helping is hurting.

          Our hope is that Denise and her family will to be drawn closer to Jesus and their lives will be an example of Him!
