APRIL 2022

A Word From Our Director General

Kurt Edwards
The events continuing in Ukraine keep us mindful of the importance of risk assessment regarding operations around conflict zones.  Many operators are avoiding airspace in the area, but some business aircraft operators are undertaking humanitarian flights in or near Ukraine.  As a result of the downing of Malaysian 17 in 2014, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) developed The Risk Assessment Manual for Civil Aircraft Operations Over or Near Conflict Zones (Doc. 10084).  We recommend it to aircraft operators that may fly in or near that area and to any operator wanting to further build their risk-assessment capabilities.
As we look to the near future, sustainability will remain a central theme at events like EBACE in May and the 41st ICAO Assembly in September-October.  The business aviation industry will demonstrate its commitment to sustainability during EBACE with a focus on tools such as sustainable aviation fuels and carbon offsetting to help our sector meet its goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.  The new carbon emissions calculator for business aviation, developed by Conklin and de Decker and now available on the IBAC website, makes estimating carbon emissions for your specific aircraft simple.  Please see more details on how the calculator can help in your operation’s sustainability efforts in Bruce Parry’s section below.

ICAO

Andreas Meyer, IBAC Director, ICAO Liaison
  • The ICAO Council and Air Navigation Commission concluded their first session in 2022. As a result, the ICAO Council has adopted a series of new amendments to electronic pilot licenses, flight operations, and continued airworthiness responsibilities.
  • IBAC was invited to two panels of the CAPSCA Global Virtual Symposium due to its continued contribution to ICAO’s public health management efforts. The Symposium concluded on the importance of a strengthened CAPSCA, which can act swiftly and provide technical and scientific advice.
  • IBAC, in close coordination with GAMA, is continuing to follow the discussion on changes to the application of True and Magnetic North in aircraft operations.
  • IBAC welcomes Mr. Nicola Rallo as the new ICAO Regional Director for Europe and the North Atlantic region and is honored to confirm Mr. Rallo’s attendance at EBACE 2022.

IS-BAH

Terry Yeomans, Programme Director
  • Workshops this year have been very well attended which is encouraging and an indicator of how our sector is recovering to the new normal after the pandemic. The next IS-BAH workshop is scheduled for the week of May 16th 2022. Register HERE.
  • April brings both ICAO Ground Handling Task Force (GHTF) and EASA Rule Making Task Force (RMT) meetings on potential ground handling regulatory oversight. IBAC and the IS-BAH team will be active on both groups and participate with any intersession work.

IS-BAO

Andrew Karas, IS-BAO Programme Director
  • Great to see everyone at the NBAA International Operators Conference in Los Angeles.  Special thank you to NBAA for putting on such a great event.  Outstanding lineup for presenters.
  • Our next Progressive Stage 3 Operator Meeting will be held on April 14 with guest speakers from Aircare International discussing Global Security
  • The next IS-BAO Fundamentals and Auditing workshops are scheduled for April 5-8.  Register now for updates on the 20th edition standard or for NBAA CAM Credits.
  • We will be attending AUVSI XPONENTIAL Conference in Orlando April 25-28.  Hope to see you all there.
  • Women in Corporate Aviation Scholarships closed out on March 25, we hope to announce the recipients on April 22.

SUSTAINABILITY

Bruce Parry, IBAC Environment Director
IBAC was pleased to announce earlier this month the news regarding the CO2 calculator which has kindly been provided to us by Conklin & de Decker, a JSSI company is now available on the IBAC EX web page.

The CO2 calculator is a vital and simple tool that will enable every operator to easily calculate the CO2 emissions that aircraft produce. Conklin & de Decker developed the tool over many years and have input the data of hundreds of fixed-wing and rotor-craft aircraft that are included in the calculator. The calculator determines the aircraft’s emissions in metric tonnes, as well as associated offsets to purchase (in USD or other currencies) on a per hour, per trip, per seat, or per year basis. The calculation is based on the aircraft’s fuel burn, average trip length, and estimated yearly flight hours and allows for pre-populated editing.

The CO2 calculator is also available on IBAC’s offset partner, CTX’s website, to enable a seamless process of calculating emissions for the purposes of purchasing voluntary offsets based on accurate emissions calculations. The emissions output information obtained from the calculator can also be used for other purposes, such as emissions monitoring, corporate reporting, and compliance reasons.

If you can’t locate your aircraft within the calculator, or you need further guidance on how the calculator works and its outputs, please don’t hesitate to contact Bruce Parry, Environment Director IBAC (bparry@ibac.org).  Alternatively, come and see us at the IBAC Stand L88 during EBACE with your aircraft details and we can give you a live demonstration of how the calculator works.
