Creek work this Saturday


Join us on Saturday, July 20 to help clear downed trees along the west branch of Starkweather Creek up to MATC. Experienced folks from Capitol Water Trails will lead us and bring equipment. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Starkweather Creek boat launch by the Olbrich playfields. Bring gloves and footwear to be in the water.
The Friends of Starkweather Creek hold events around the creek year round, which are open to the general public. For paddling events, we provide canoes, paddles, life jackets and basic instruction. We hope you can join us!

    Water Critters & Creek Health
    Join Starkweather advocate Lance Green for a free, fun, family and kid friendly walk along Starkweather Creek in the heart of Madison's East Side just off East Washington Avenue. Keeping our creeks and lakes clean and healthy is important to all of us from the tiniest to the largest. Come and help Lance dip water samples along the creek and look for tiny water critters!
    Meet at the corner of Clyde Gallagher Ave and Hermina St.

    Meet at Starkweather boat launch, 3402 Atwood Ave
  • Saturday, Aug 17, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. - Eken Park Festival
    The Friends of Starkweather Creek will have a table. 2407 Coolidge St.
  • Saturday, Oct 19, 10 -11:30 am - Canoe the Creek 
    Meet at Starkweather boat launch, 3402 Atwood Ave
  • Saturday, Oct 19, 10 - 11:30 am - Native Plant Workshop with Jeff Steele
    Meet at bike path by Goodman Community Center.

How we help the creek


A bit about what we do
  • Advocate for the creek with city and county officials
  • Lead free canoe, bike & walking tours throughout the year
  • Co-sponsor a summer and a winter solstice celebration 
  • Work with Goodman Center and Madison FUN to get people out on the creek
  • Volunteer as water quality monitors for the DNR
  • Provide a place for community members to share their concerns and plan projects around the creek
  • Share news about the creek via our email newsletter
  • Work with experts on projects to promote a healthy creek ecosystem

Feel free to join us at our monthly board meetings and learn more about us and our activities. All are welcome. We meet at the Goodman Community Center from 7-9 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
