From Julie

Welcome to Semester 2!

Welcome back to what's going to be a busy Semester two!

First up, we're really excited to begin the second event for our 2016 stage of our Western Front Anzac Day & Centenary Choir Project. As part of this commitment to the Department of Veterans' Affairs, our Western Front Centenary choir will perform at the 100th Anniversaries of the Battles of Fromelles and Pozieres, on July 19 and 23. I am very proud to be conducting this choir, assisted by Claire Preston, and know the 15 young choristers will do an exceptional job as we honour the Anzacs who fought in these significant battles on the Western Front, France.

As per usual with these trips, you can follow along with our blogs, with a preview you can read here, and the first of the daily blogs to be released this Friday. Our blogs will note the times and days when the services will be aired on the ABC.

In other news, we're delighted to have recruited 54 enthusiastic choristers for
our older-give-it-a-go choir, Birralee Recycled. Rehearsals begin Monday 1 August, for what's going to be a fun and rewarding process for all involved. If you didn't get your registration in on time, we have a few spots available. Please contact Johanna via

There are a few spaces in some of our ensembles for Semester 2 - these include the Birralee Blokes, Birralee Kids and Piccolos, with limited spots in the Birralee Singers and Brisbane Birralee Voices. If you know anyone who would like to join us, make sure you share this newsletter with them, with more information

Until next time,

Spotlight on our singers

Isabelle Till, 11, Birralee Singers

School: Grovely State School

When did you join Birralee? I Started Birralee at the start of this year. I joined Birralee because singing is my passion and I wanted to show the world what I can do.

Highlight since joining? We have done some amazing songs this year and I believe that we can do more. That would make the concerts even more amazing.

Why do you sing? I Sing because singing is my world and I don’t know what I would do without it. I hope to become a musician when I grow up so I can go around the world doing what I love.

Favourite song? 'Take to the sky'. It gives everyone a chance to do a solo and it is very energetic. I love energetic songs because the whole choir is moving to the beat and it just sounds incredible.

Other hobbies? I also do violin, swimming and dance. I love dance the most because it’s like singing but you move your body, not your voice. Violin is fun because when you get better and better, you can do really cool songs.

MacLeod Chapman, 13, Birralee Blokes

School: Kedron State High School, Year 7.
When did you join Birralee? I never liked taking the time to do my piano practice, but singing practice can be done anytime, anywhere, so choir was a much more enjoyable option.

Highlight since joining? One word… TASMANIA!!

Why do you sing? Singing makes me feel great, and it's fun to rehearse with the other Blokes every week.

Favourite songs? I love the Footloose and Abba medley, as they are very familiar. Pirates Medley - the lyrics are clever. I still sing Pemulwuy! as it is such a powerful piece of music!

Other hobbies? I love laughing with my school mates, camping with my family and chillin’ with my cat.

Thanks to our trivia series' sponsors!
