From Julie

Coming up in April and May!

Ciao from Italy! The team at Birralee are having a lovely time in Europe, experiencing the history and culture of these amazing cities. The choristers are performing extraordinarily and we
are excited for the Anzac Day performance at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux. We will send through the performance times for you to tune in on Thursday 25 April, once the ABC has released their schedule.

Until then, we invite you to keep up with the daily blogs from Europe, written by Ally Dunk and Joshua Clifford, who are among our 72 touring choristers. Follow their exciting journey through Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, and France here.

We would also like to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter and are looking forward to seeing you all in term two, with rehearsals beginning next week!

Kind regards,

Julie Christiansen OAM

Casey became involved with Voices of Birralee in 2014 joining as part of Resonance of Birralee and the administration team.
What brought you to Birralee and when? I first became involved with Birralee in 2014 when I helped out at the Birralee Celebrates concert at City Hall. Experiencing both the choristers’ enthusiasm and quality of performance inspired me greatly and I have been involved in various capacities in the office and as a chorister in Resonance ever since!

What do you enjoy about your work? It is fulfilling to be part of an awesome team that brings rewarding musical experiences to children and young adults. I am grateful to get to work with wonderful people across all aspects of the organisation – from the office and artistic team to the choristers themselves.

What makes Birralee a unique organisation? In addition to the wonderful music that is made, Birralee offers a sense of community that is difficult to find elsewhere. Beyond the rehearsal room, choristers and their families often make long lasting friendships and connections which I think is really beautiful.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? My activities outside of work usually involve running a charity based in Nepal, tutoring refugees, writing music for concert bands and studying.

What is something interesting about you that not many people know? I have a neurological condition called synaesthesia, where the brain associates everything with colours. Google it!

Some of our touring choristers were featured in media stories over the last couple of weeks! Alanah Kennedy and Lily Forbes share why singing at the Anzac Day Dawn Service is important to them. Read Alanah's feature here and Lily's story here
Bruno Hickey from BBV has had an exciting start to the holidays, with Bruno recently competing in the World Scholar’s Cup. Bruno received a gold medal for history and two silver medals for debating and writing. His team came third in the Team Challenge, fourth in the team bowl and received a gold medal for debating.

Bruno was also invited to the ABC Radio Brisbane studio on Monday morning to chat live on air to Rebecca Levingston about his thoughts on politics.

Congrats to Sim Patrick Cajurao for receiving the Musician Award in 2018 at McDowall State School! Sim has also achieved an A on his Grade 4 Violin AMEB. He is part of the Birralee Singers in the Saturday group.
