From Julie

Coming up in March and April!

First of all congrats to our choristers who performed in
Blue Planet II - Live in Concert last Monday night. Check out their pic in the Chorister Highlights section below. From all accounts, you sang wonderfully and contributed to an amazing event. We're also excited that you got to meet Joanna Lumley

We're now counting down to our tour in April centring around our choristers performing across Anzac Day at the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux. We'd love to see everyone supporting those touring, along with their fellow Birralee Blokes and Brisbane Birralee Voices choristers, all performing at the Dedication Service & Concert on 31 March. Book your tickets here, and read more about upcoming events below.

In other news, we invite you to read this month's blog, written by Kate Littlewood, who this year took on the role of Birralee Kids' conductor. In this blog she shares why she loves conducting children's choirs. Read more here

Sarah, who received her 20 years with Birralee award in 2015, has returned to Birralee to sing in the newly configured Resonance of Birralee.

Why did you return to Birralee this year?
I have been suffering from chronic pain for the past three years and had the corrective surgery over Christmas to relieve this. I love singing, but didn’t have the emotional headspace to commit to rehearsals and performances in addition to my job, when I was struggling with pain so consistently.

What are the most significant memories you have with Birralee over the previous 20+ years?
I definitely have loved all the road-trip tours! It doesn’t matter whether you’re driving across Europe or heading to Newcastle, sitting on a bus with your friends for the long-haul was always the best.
What do you think are the benefits of singing in a choir for people of all ages?
The musicality you can develop as a singer is wide-ranging and unique to the choral experience. I have always found being a chorister and part of an ensemble takes this to a whole new level. It also exposes you to people and opportunities that you wouldn’t otherwise experience.

What do you think about Resonance of Birralee’s evolution in 2019?
I think it’s fantastic that Resonance has continued to grow into two separate ensembles. Having the two choirs enables them to focus on the age-group, which dictates and provides performance opportunities that are suitable to that of the choir and the repertoire they are performing.

Anything else you’d like to add?
In addition to creating stunning music and life opportunities for all involved, Voices of Birralee helps shape and grow their choristers into young people who can reach their fullest potential. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the experiences afforded to me by Julie and the rest of the Voices of Birralee team.

Bridget recently joined Voices of Birralee to assist the organisation with administration, including marketing and accounts.
What brought you to Birralee?
I am passionate about working in the arts industry and was aware of what a fantastic
organisation Birralee is after a number of my school friends are long-standing choristers. It was definitely an easy decision for me to take up the opportunity!

What do you enjoy about your work?
I love that this job allows me to combine my passion for the arts with my skills in marketing and communications, to spread the joy of music amongst children and adults.

What makes Birralee a unique organisation?
Definitely the people. I feel a strong sense of family in this community, and there is a collective desire to provide an environment that encourages confidence and self-expression.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Away from work I love participating in Xtend Barre classes (a ballet-inspired fitness workout), going to the theatre to see ballet or musical productions, and walking my beautiful Ridgeback-Rottweiler dog, Sonny.

What is something interesting about you that not many people know?
I can't sing! I can pirouette and leap across a stage but sadly I cannot hold a tune. I am hoping the incredible vocal talent surrounding me at Birralee will start to rub off soon!
Congrats to Pip Thomson, member of Resonance of Birralee who got married to Robert Callanan on 2 March at Cowbell Creek at Austinville on the Gold Coast.
Congrats to the group of Resonance of Birralee choristers who were a part of the incredible Blue Planet II - Live in Concert earlier this month! Pictured with host Joanna Lumley and Conductor Vanessa Scammell are choristers Lauren Elvery, Libby Lynch, Kate Holley, Andrew Hurman, Clare Finlayson, James Tudball, Oli Peake, Sam Mosely, Tilly Ingram, Rohan Osborne, Johanna Davie and Andy Francis.

Lucy MacDonald (Birralee Singers) was selected as School Captain for her primary school in 2019.

Ashlin Cork (BBV) recently was presented with a Gold Award for Academic Excellence for her efforts in Semester 2 of 2018 at Mt Maria College.
