From Julie

A special welcome to our new members!

Welcome back to a busy term and a warm welcome to our new members. We are looking forward to seeing you flourish and enjoy your Birralee journey! We're here to support you during your learning and if our members or parents have any questions, please chat with your conductor, choir managers or our team at Birralee HQ.

In this edition, we welcome our newest artistic team members, while also beginning our chorister highlights for the year to celebrate achievements, whether they be musical, academic, sporting or more.

If you have any highlights you would like to share, email them to

We're also counting down the days until
our final tour of our commitment with the Department of Veterans' Affairs. This tour will be the biggest in Birralee's 24 year history, with 71 choristers drawn from our Birralee Blokes and BBV choirs, with a great entourage of accompanying parents and friends. Rehearsals are underway and we can't wait to share their progress.

Until next time.

Kind regards,

Julie Christiansen OAM

When did you join Birralee?
This is our sixth year with Birralee. I took on library duties last year and the role of BBV's librarian the year before.

What do you enjoy about being involved with the
As a family, we love the joy of making music and friendships through singing. Birralee is like a family sharing experiences and building memories. The choir’s chosen repertoire is always inspiring, multicultural and varying in style. My children now have a wide appreciation of music from classical, to folk and jazz. They have had the challenge of being taught songs in several languages.

What has been a highlight?
The opportunities Birralee offer its choristers are exceptional, including singing at
world-class events and venues such as the Commonwealth Games, operas such as Carmen, performing with QSO in Nutcracker, Bernstein at 100 and Spirit of Christmas. The choristers finely hone both their performance skills and stage presentation under the leadership of professionals. As a parent, I love that the choir is fun-filled, disciplined and challenging. All the conductors seem to have the gift of keeping this balance within an atmosphere of encouragement and professionalism.
What do you do outside Birralee? My work managing our medical practice (Psychiatric) keeps me very busy. Previously, I had taught in secondary schools, as an art consultant, professional development provider, and administrator. Outside of work, I love spending time with my children and husband Ian, going on bushwalks, to the beach, art galleries, and the movies. I also love reading, illustrating and painting.
Attention music teachers in the Birralee community!

Voices of Birralee manages the annual Queensland Youth Music Awards, to be held 2 May - 6 June 2019.

The competition has run for 52 years and celebrates giving students in both primary and secondary schools the opportunity to explore their choral and instrumental music, in a supportive environment.

Entries close 8 March. Entry information
Joanna Craddy (BBV) attended Gondwana National Choral School in January. "Under the guidance of our two conductors, Chris Burcin and Paul Jarman, as well as our accompanist Sally Whitwell, I had the opportunity to perform some amazing pieces! I even got to sing Pemulwuy which was probably the most exciting part of it all," Joanna said. Fellow Voices of Birralee choristers who also attended the school included Alexander Graves, Jaspin Chamberlain-Kent, Tilly Lawson, Charlie Stewart and Daniel Yasar.

Josh Phillips (Blokes) completed his Grade 5 piano exam and received an A Honors. He was also voted Choral Captain at St Pauls.

Katja Bain (BBV) auditioned and was chosen to appear in an Education Queensland anti-bullying commercial for screening across the state.
Cameron Bryer (Blokes) was awarded age champion at his school's swimming carnival.
