While in 2015 project actions were mainly focused on forestry works, during the first half of 2016 the efforts have been devoted to get the livestock units started.
Livestock projects are currently underway or about to start in 11 of the 19 livestock management units designed to cover the strategic areas for fire prevention within the project area. This results in 10 livestock holdings directly related to the LIFE Montserrat project, providing forest grazing activity and maintaining lower fire risk and higher nature value landscapes. Six of the holdings work with goats and there are three working with cows and one working with donkeys. Half of them are newly created while the existing ones have increased the number of animals and the grazing area. They all belong to the recently created Montserrat Association of Livestock Farmers. This entity, together with the Association of Forest Owners, should conduct main land management actions to achieve the project objectives in the long term, beyond the financial support of the LIFE Programme.
